Malye Kurily State Refuge is situated on the islands of the Lesser Kuril Ridge and includes the most part of Shikotan Island.
It also includes all other islands of the Lesser Kuril Ridge and one-mile water area surrounding them, besides the islands that are part of Kurilsky Nature Reserve.
